Côteaux de Bassenon is the most southerly vineyard in Côte-Rôtie. 20% of the vineyard is planted to Viognier, and the rest is planted half to Serine (a variety related to Syrah, only with smaller berries and lower yields) and half to Syrah. It has all the notes that you expect from Syrah and Serine such as blackberries, cinnamon, liquorice and little bursts of violets. What captivates is the freshness on the palate which makes for an extremely long finish and enhances the mineral imprint of the soils.
